The liminal space
It feels uncomfortable, but you don’t know why. It’s a different kind of restlessness, and you can’t quite put your finger on why. You’re healthy, safe, reasonably happy, nothing is a tragedy, but nothing is really lighting you up either. You’re existing. Day by day. Getting through it. Sure, there is joy and harmony on the horizon, you know that, but where exactly that horizon lies is uncertain. And seriously, how loooong do you need to wait to get there?!?
This is the liminal space. The space between worlds… the old, and the, not-quite-there-yet, new. The mysterious, in-between realm where nothing and everything exist at once. It feels like a holding pattern, but it’s actually a sacred space. Why? Because it’s the threshold where transformation happens - a recalibration of self; an opportunity to dive into a deeper knowing and understanding of WHO you are, and what really makes you tick. It’s an opportunity to see your light, to reclaim your light, but not in the way it was before… more in the way that it can shine brighter and more luminescent than ever before.
So, what do you do while you’re here? You LEAN IN.
Feel the unease, sit with it, breathe into it. It will feel uncomfortable, awkward, and even painful. You’ll feel restless and uneasy and might need to cry it out. You’re allowed to let it all out. In fact, it’s essential. So, meditate, journal, breathe deeply, walk, walk, keep walking… on the beach, on the grass, in the woods, barefoot, no technology – no earphones, no music, no phone calls. Just you, and Mother Nature. Let her hold you – she’s got you.
Find that sacred place that you can sit and breathe it all in and feel sovereign.
We’ve all got one. Mine is on the rocks of a headland, overlooking the ocean. Yours might be at the beach, on your favourite bushwalk track, in the shower or in your room with the door shut… it doesn’t matter where it is, it only matters where it can take you – inside. And if you’re not sure where that space is, think on it, let it sink in… it’ll come to you. Because the answers we always need are inside of us. Often buried under multiple To Do lists, obligations, deadlines, things you need to do as a Mum, wife, partner, boss, employee, daughter… all these other ‘priorities’ often overpower us, so we continue to put our own needs aside. Sometimes we put them aside so much that we don’t even know what our own needs are anymore, the little voice inside now only speaks in reminders and orders, and doubts. She’s a little lost, and a lot tired. She needs the kind of TLC that you give to everyone else. Ironic, isn’t it?
As women, we know how to deeply care for others, to hold our loved ones safe and secure, and to juggle a million things at once and still get through the day. But somewhere along the journey, after we’ve played a few chance cards, and before we passed go, we stopped tuning in to ourselves. We know deep down sometimes what we need, but that’s on the To Do list too… when we have time, after we have done this for that person… and the list goes on, and with it, down the list our own self falls.
Sometimes the reminder to hold space for ourselves comes when someone else holds it for us, creating the room for quiet. And that’s where I come in.
